Super Heroes of Green River Preserve

Camp is full of superheroes. Here is a sneak peak of some of the characters your children may encounter at camp.

 

 

Dr. Dodo & Mr. Bojangles: Dr. Dodo is GRP’s resident ornithologist and often comes to breakfast to teach the campers and staff about the Bird of the Day. Mr Bojangles is Dr. Dodo’s less enthusiastic sidekick who resembles a pirate’s parrot. It’s amazing how often we have bird sightings within the dining hall when Dr. Dodo is present!

The Cabin Fairy & Lars: The Cabin Fairy ensures cleanliness at GRP awarding the pink flamingo to the cleanest cabin each day and the rubber chicken to the dirtiest cabin. The Cabin Fairy has been known to be a world traveler but is most concerned about keeping your child’s cabin liveable. Her sidekick, Lars, doesn’t typically say much but every good superhero needs a sidekick right?

Ortman & Scrappy: Two superheroes from the new millenium sent down from planet compost to fight the ORT wars forevermore (forevermore…). Ortman and Scrappy typically appear at dinnertime to evaluate if the campers are being mindful when serving themselves and producing very little ORT. Every camper wants to find out that the group is in Coolsville rather than the scary Danger Zone. Until next time campers, the ORT salute: “Waste not! Want not!”

Ruby began her career in camping at YMCA Camp Widjiwagan in her hometown of Nashville, TN. At Camp Widjiwagan, she was a counselor who progressed over the years to camp administration. Prior to moving to Western North Carolina, Ruby taught experiential education at Nature’s Classroom Atop Lookout Mountain in Mentone, AL. Ruby found Green River Preserve to be a perfect blend of everything she loves: teaching environmental education, being curious about nature, calling contra-dances, singing about Itty Bitty Frogs, and learning from other outdoor educators. She is active within the American Camp Association, giving presentations at conferences and working as a faculty member of their e-Institute. Ruby is also an avid geocacher, runner, and Rubik’s-cube solver.
