We are pleased to announce Green River Preserve has partnered with Queens University to offer college credit for our Western Expedition (WXP) and Trail Blazers Leadership Expedition (TBX). These Expeditions are for rising 11th and 12th graders and college freshmen and have limited spaces available.
Western Expeditions spends three weeks exploring the San Juan Mountains in southwest Colorado and the high desert of northern New Mexico. With a small group of eight, participants will walk amongst the ancestral Pueblo peoples in Chaco Canyon, white water raft the thrilling Colorado River, backpack around the historic mining town of Silverton, Colorado, and contribute to regional and global research projects. The 2015 Western Expedition will be led by none other than Star Ellis, a senior mentor and 26 year employee of Green River Preserve. Over the course of four weeks, TBX Expeditioners will earn their Wilderness First Aid certificate, help restore a trail on the preserve for future campers, and participate in daily classes and discussions (naturally these will be outside!) The heart of the Trail Blazers Expedition is leadership training and life skills development. TBX leaders step back and allow the Expeditioners to organize, plan, and make decisions as a team for their daily project plans and backcountry living. The Expeditioners discover themselves, feel challenged and prepared, and they gain GRIT. They build self-confidence, social achievement, and leadership. Globally, employers are recognizing that graduates lack the life skills needed in todays’ workforce (Partnership for 21st Century Skills: http://www.p21.org/storage/documents/FINAL_REPORT_PDF09-29-06.pdf). Most young people feel weakened and depleted by their experiences in school. Green River Preserve Expeditions strives to fill these gaps. Our Expedition Programs inspire innovation and creativity; encouraging participants to “think outside of the box” and develop strengths. Participants recognize the importance of communication and collaboration; critical thinking and problem solving…they learn to apply their strengths and work as a team. They discover themselves.
