Staff Spotlight: Dillon Glass

For this week’s Staff Spotlight, we caught up with Dillon Glass!

Q: What is your position at GRP this Summer?
A: Theatre Coordinator

Q: How many years have you been at GRP?
A: This will be my third year at GRP as a staff member.

Q: What are you currently doing?
A: I am currently living in Frisco, CO working as a ski instructor. I’m loving spending days upon days of skiing and sharing my passion with the kiddos.

Q: What is your spirit animal and why?
A: If I choose an animal that most represents myself, I would say the dolphin because dolphins seem to play around in the water a lot and explore. Dolphins remind me of Jonathan Livingston Seagull in that they understand their is more to life than survival— family, joy, diligence.

Q: What are you passionate about?
A: As I look at the course of my life so far, I can say with the most certainty that I am passionate about being outside, working with young people, and creating theatre.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do outside?
A: Oh my gosh! I don’t think I can choose just one. In only a slightly particular order: swimming, mountain biking, skiing, and looking at plants/mushrooms are the top ones, but to be honest, I love to do anything outside.

Q: Tell us about your favorite trip/experience.
A: My favorite trip has got to be when a good group of friends and I went to Big Bend National Park in west Texas. It was the first national park I had visited. We stayed for six days and hiked the tallest peak one day then explored a 1,200-ft high canyon the next. It was my first experience being away from everything I knew and spending all-day outdoors. It was addicting and soon-thereafter I applied to work at Green River. Coincidence? I think not.

Q: Why did you choose to come back to GRP this summer?
A: Given I am passionate about the outdoors, teaching, and theatre, I was looking to find an outlet to explore all three. I had run the Theatre Program during sessions four and five last year and had had an amazing time, so when I began to think about 2017, I was extremely motivated to come back to GRP to focus on creating an environment centered around creativity and community-building as the Theatre Coordinator. I believe that theatre is an important agency in creating a space of growth and understanding. I’m really excited!

Q: What is something interesting that happened to you this year?
A: I would say the most interesting experience I have had this year was on New Year’s Eve. It is a tradition at the mountain I am working at for the ski instructors to come down the main ski run to the shops and restaurants with road flares in their hand under the stars and the moon. I was fortunate enough to be a part of the tradition this year, and it turned out to be a really exhilarating experience to be skiing only by moon and torchlight with 70 of my colleagues. It was really fun.

Q: Where is your favorite place to hike?
A: My favorite place to hike is about an hour and a half northwest of the Preserve at Black Bolsom Knob. It is right in the heart of the Appalachian mountains with stunning 360-degree views. It’s always so quiet up there and so close to the sky. It’s a nice place to go to rest my mind and body for the day. And the stars are beautiful. Thanks for reading!
