Liz can’t remember how many years she has been coming to GRP! Liz started out as a parent, dropping her daughter off and wishing she could go to camp with her, and then Sandy mentioned at an alumni gathering that she could be a mentor and she applied! Liz has been returning since then with her daughter or son and this will be the first year that she is at GRP without her own kids - she is hooked! Liz currently teachs science and computer science at The Expedition School, a STEM based charter school on the banks of the Eno River in Hillsborough, NC. She also hikes with her dogs. Some of Liz’s favorite memories at GRP include sunsets on Long Rock. Liz says that just being there alone or with 50 other people, you feel so connected to the mountains. Liz has a BA in Natural Sciences from Simon’s Rock of Bard College, and a Master of Environmental Management from Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University, and another Masters in Education from the University of Phoenix. Liz’s favorite outdoor activities include hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and backpacking. She chooses to spend her summer with a bunch of kids in nature because she feels that the campers make her a better person every summer. Plus, she says that it is really fun. Liz keeps coming back to GRP because she loves the mountains and keeping cool in the summer by spending her time near rivers and waterfalls. It relaxes and rejuvenates her spirit. Liz’s favorite thing to cook in the backountry is pita pizzas, of course. Her favorite outdoor adventure is living in Thailand for two years at Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary at the base of the largest waterfall in Thailand.
