The beginning of a session, especially three-week, is an incredibly special thing to witness. Old friends effortlessly slot back together as if no time has passed, and newcomers are welcomed with open arms by cabinmates and counselors alike into the culture and spirit of GRP.
One core tradition of GRP, and a favorite of all who have played, is Predator Prey – a game of survival, strategy, and fun. Cabin groups are placed along the food chain, and transform for the night into insects, frogs, snakes, and hawks. Our campers dressed the part, with the former three groups camouflaged in dark colors, camo print, and facepaint, and our hawks decked out in striking neon and tie-dye attire.
As a past camper, Predator Prey night was filled with adrenaline, ambition, and excitement. As a counselor, those things still hold true – and it’s also an incredible time to watch your cabin truly come together as a team on that first full day, working together to obtain resources and pull off successful attacks.
As groups moved all around base camp, whether they were attacking in the field, skulking along the perimeter trail on their way to food, water, or shelter; or taking a brief respite in the safe zone of Cabinville – lifelong memories were made, and fun was had by every camper.
We ended the night by coming back together on the hill and reflecting on how our game represents everyday life for many of our animals on the preserve. It’s not easy out there! But we can always help them out by respecting nature and the environment.
After singing sisters brothers, snack was had – a well-deserved reward after running around all night – and campers raced back to their cabins to be first in line for showers!
