The third session at GRP began with a beautiful rain to welcome our campers in!
The Green River Preserve is situated in the heart of a temperate rainforest; a rare, lush environment characterized by the heavy rainfall and unique flora and fauna that came to live there as a result. Ferns unfurl their long, reaching stems to the sky; the fruiting bodies of manyfold fungi bloom to life under the gentle streams of water; salamanders and frogs emerge from their hidden homes amongst the crevices of rocks and the soft earth beneath to taste the air and drink in the rain.
Under the peels of rain, the opening day Upper Council Fire was held going into the evening, as a gorgeous storm rolled in.
Under the pines, a rushing wind swirled over the mountaintops - sitting down under the roof of our gazebo as the rain pelted down above, campers and staff alike sang the storm in at the top of their lungs and laughed along with the thunder. The rain played out a brilliant percussion as our staff (and eventually, camper!) band, The Green River Ramblers, lead the camp in songs that many of our returning campers know by heart, and the cheer for an encore could be heard around basecamp through the rain.
Finally, as the last song was played, the rain died down, and the campers made their way back to their cabins, warm and dry and ready for bed, more excited than ever for the adventures they would be embarking on soon.
