There’s a special kind of energy that fills the air during staff training week at Green River Preserve. It’s a mix of anticipation, purpose, and deep-rooted excitement—and this year, that energy is stronger than ever thanks to our incredible new staff.
As the forest welcomes another season of discovery, so too does our community welcome a new generation of Counselors, Mentors, and leaders. These fresh faces have arrived with open hearts, eager minds, and a clear commitment to the mission of GRP: to inspire environmental stewards through a joyful connection with nature.
Learning the Land, Growing as Leaders
Over the past week, our new staff have jumped headfirst into learning what it means to be part of the GRP family. From the basics of camp life to the finer points of risk management, trail navigation, and age-group development, they’re already becoming thoughtful and capable guides for the summer ahead.
They’ve spent mornings practicing group facilitation techniques, afternoons role-playing real camp scenarios, and evenings in reflection. Staff have learned how to lead hikes with curiosity, how to build trust and community in their cabins, and how to spot the subtle signs of growth in a Camper’s confidence or creativity.
Skill Acquisition Meets Soulful Connection
Of course, it wouldn’t be GRP without moments of wonder. New staff have learned to identify native plants, build fires, navigate by map, and lead games that make laughter echo through the woods. Beyond hard skills, they’re cultivating something even deeper—confidence, resilience, and the ability to lead with empathy.
Watching our new staff support one another, ask thoughtful questions, and challenge themselves to grow has been nothing short of inspiring. They’re learning to lead with curiosity, to teach with joy, and to listen—really listen—with the kind of attention that makes others feel seen.

Every summer, the magic of GRP begins with our staff—and this group is already showing us they’re more than ready to carry that magic forward. With their enthusiasm, dedication, and rapidly growing skill sets, we know they’ll be extraordinary mentors and role models for our Campers.
