Green River Preserve Expeditions are teen adventure camps offering transformational life experiences and leadership training while earning college credit.
Groups of up to twelve participants in rising 9th grade to college freshman and their leaders embark on a two or three week adventure trip in one of our four expedition sites. Blue Ridge Expeditions (BRX) is a two week backpacking and whitewater canoe trip in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Outer Banks Expeditions (OBX) is a two week backpacking and sea kayaking trip on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Western Expeditions (WXP) is a three week backpacking and white water rafting trip in the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado. Trail Blazers Leadership Expedition (TBX) is a four week leadership and service trip in the Blue Ridge Mountains. College credit hours are offered with Queens University for both WXP and TBX Expeditions.
Green River Preserve Expeditioners discover themselves…face their fears…and gain GRIT. They build life skills such as self-confidence, social achievement, teamwork and leadership. They become their Best Me!
Green River Preserve is a Special Permit Holder by Pisgah National Forest, Dupont State Forest, Cape Lookout National Seashore, and Croation National Forest.
As educators, we believe campers learn best by doing. On an Expedition, campers participate daily in activities they normally may take for granted such as gathering water, cooking meals, collecting firewood, and taking care of group needs. These basic daily skills are part of our community living and become the building blocks to develop further life and leadership skills. Similar to GRP summer camp, Expeditions focuses on the process of learning versus the outcome of the particular skill. We believe with understanding comes knowledge and an enhanced appreciation of life skills. As a result Expeditioners are better prepared to translate the skills learned on a GRP Expedition into the real world.
Campers also learn best when they are excited about an opportunity. For this reason, Expeditioners are given a choice in group decisions. For example, each Expedition has trip options and the Expeditioners choose as a group which option best fits their needs and capabilities.
Expeditions are imbedded with life skills such as goal setting, teamwork, decision making, and problem solving. Based on a foundation of respect for others, Expeditioners also practice and learn about self evaluation, communication, community living, initiative, responsibility, and appreciation. Expeditioners will find adventure and wilderness living encourages the development of these skills as they apply to life’s expedition and a connection to the outside world.
Green River Preserve has partnered with Queens University of Charlotte, NC to offer college credit for Western Expeditions (WXP) and Trail Blazer Leadership Expeditions (TBX). These Expeditions are for rising 11th and 12th graders and rising college freshmen. As a participant you can choose to backpack and whitewater raft in the Southern Rocky Mountains of Colorado or focus on developing your leadership style while building a trail for future generations. Up to four college credits can be earned. Visit the specific Expedition webpages for more details.
