GRP Expeditions
Learn About ExpeditionsOur Philosophy
As educators, we believe campers learn best by doing. On an Expedition, campers participate daily in activities they normally may take for granted such as gathering water, cooking meals, collecting firewood, and taking care of group needs. These basic daily skills are part of our community living and become the building blocks to develop further life and leadership skills. Similar to GRP summer camp, Expeditions focuses on the process of learning versus the outcome of the particular skill. We believe with understanding comes knowledge and an enhanced appreciation of life skills. As a result Expeditioners are better prepared to translate the skills learned on a GRP Expedition into the real world.
Learning Opportunities
Campers also learn best when they are excited about an opportunity. For this reason, Expeditioners are given a choice in group decisions. For example, each Expedition has trip options and the Expeditioners choose as a group which option best fits their needs and capabilities.
Life Skills
Expeditions are imbedded with life skills such as goal setting, teamwork, decision making, and problem solving. Based on a foundation of respect for others, Expeditioners also practice and learn about self evaluation, communication, community living, initiative, responsibility, and appreciation. Expeditioners will find adventure and wilderness living encourages the development of these skills as they apply to life’s expedition and a connection to the outside world.
